Solomon Islands has joined the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization as WIPO’s 192nd Member State.

WIPO Director General Francis Gurry received on April 4, 2019, the instrument of accession to the WIPO Convention from Ambassador Barrett Salato, Permanent Representative of the Solomon Islands to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva.

Solomon Islands also joined the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works on the same date.

Both treaties will enter into effect with respect to Solomon Islands on July 4, 2019.

Background

The WIPO Convention is the constituent instrument of the World Intellectual Property Organization. It was signed at Stockholm on July 14, 1967 and entered into force in 1970. The origins of WIPO go back to 1883 and 1886 when the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works provided for the establishment of an "International Bureau". The two bureaus were united in 1893 and in 1970 were replaced by the World Intellectual Property Organization, by virtue of the WIPO Convention.
